early childhood education in Hong Kong
Early Childhood Education (ECE) in Hong Kong is a very hot topic. I’ve been invited to share my views as a community leader on this issue, and it’s captured the public psyche for good reason. There are few parts of Hong Kong society that affect the lives of more children than early childhood education, which tends to take place during the earliest years of a person’s life. I started my professional career as an early education teacher teaching toddlers to read (and loving it!). Then I moved into administration where I helped create two early childhood programs from scratch. I’m currently the Chairperson of the Hong Kong Parent-Teacher Association (HKPTA). My ECE journey has been a fascinating one and has given me a unique perspective on some of the pressing issues that we face in this realm right now.

1. Early Childhood Education helps children develop good habits and skills that will continue throughout their lives:

When children are very young, it’s a great time to help them start adopting habits in terms of cleanliness, self-control, and other positive traits that they’ll carry with them later on in life. This is also a great time to teach them how to learn—because learning how to learn is one of the most important skills a person can have.

2. Early childhood is when many of the foundations for a child’s future success are laid:

Children who begin school behind their peers can often struggle academically, socially, and even emotionally as they progress through school and into adulthood. If we’re going to give children a head start on their education, then this is the time period when it’s most impactful.

 3. The early years are crucial for brain development:

Today we know much more about how important the brain’s early stages are for future development than we did in the past. It turns out that these early years of life make all the difference in determining whether or not a child will grow up to have higher-order thinking skills such as reasoning, problem-solving, creativity, and abstract thinking.

4. The early years are crucial for brain development:

Today we know much more about the importance of early childhood development than ever before. When children engage in activities that stimulate their minds, they’re building neural connections in their brains—connections that will continue to influence their growth and learning across all developmental domains.

5. Early intervention can impact a child’s success in school and social development:

If a young child is struggling with certain concepts or skills, intervening at an early age can have a big impact on their educational trajectory later in life. Children who have enrolled in early intervention programs have been shown to have better academic outcomes and higher graduation rates later. It’s clear that high-quality early childhood education has lifelong benefits for young learners! So why is early education so important? Because it’s been proven to help children reach their full potential in multiple areas: socially, emotionally, cognitively, and academically. So no matter what your predisposed opinions towards pre-k education maybe? It’s definitely something worth considering if you want to provide your young child with a solid foundation for the future.
